01Process context
The process environment
Chemical and petrochemical plants convert feedstocks through reaction, separation and purification steps in which temperature, pressure, flow and composition determine yield, product quality and safe operation. Many units run continuously; others are batch or semi-batch, where sequence and recipe control matter as much as individual loops.
The media are often corrosive, toxic, flammable, viscous or prone to fouling. Wetted materials, seals and process connections have to suit the chemistry, and many instruments sit in hazardous areas. Reliable measurement here is a materials and installation problem as much as a sensing one.

03Engineering considerations
What makes chemical & petrochemical facilities demanding
The conditions that shape instrument selection, installation and control design in this environment.
Corrosive and fouling media
Wetted materials, diaphragm seals, liners and process connections are selected against the chemistry and temperature, not only the measuring range.
Hazardous areas
Flammable liquids and vapours mean classified zones around much of the plant; each instrument's protection concept and installation must suit its zone, gas group and temperature class.
Batch and continuous control
Batch units need sequence, recipe and phase logic with consistent records; continuous units need stable regulatory control and clear alarm handling. Many plants need both.
Serviceability
Isolation valves, calibration access and impulse-line design decide whether an instrument can be maintained without disturbing the process.
